Apply for planning permission

The easiest and quickest way to apply for planning permission is online through the Planning Portal. The Planning Portal is an external website used by local councils in England and Wales as part of the planning process.

On the Planning Portal you will be able to register, complete your application form, upload supporting documents and pay fees online.

Submitting your application and paying fees online will make the registration and consultation process faster and more efficient.

The Planning Portal will guide you through the process, but if you need any further help making your online application you can contact the Planning Portal service desk.

Before you apply for planning permission

 Before you apply, please check you have done the following:

• checked if you need permission for the work you want to do
• understood how much it will cost. View more information on planning application fees
• viewed our planning policy information to see policies that planning applications are assessed against
• found out what you need to supply with an application - make sure you have included all the national mandatory relevant information as well as the plans of the proposal for a householder application. Please note a planning application cannot be progressed until all the necessary supporting information and the appropriate fee is received.

Planning application fees

You can view the costs of applying for planning permission using the Planning Portal website, the planning portal fee calculator is a useful way to check fees.

The fee can be paid online using the Planning Portal website.

What happens after a planning application has been submitted 

When the application has been submitted, we will contact you or your agent to confirm that the application is valid (up and running) or if extra information is needed. If you have provided an e-mail address this will be via e-mail or by post if not. All applications are allocated a unique application reference number.

Building regulation approval 

Depending on the work you are doing you might also need to get building regulation approval.
