Councillors’ main roles are:

(a) To collectively (through the Council) be the ultimate policy-makers and contribute to setting the policies and budget of the Council

(b) Where they are Executive Members or members of regulatory committees, to take or participate in decision making on behalf of the Council

(c) Either as members of Overview and Scrutiny Committees or individually to hold decision makers to account and to contribute to policy development

(d) To promote improvements in services which benefit the community

(e) To demonstrate high ethical standards and, in particular, to abide by the Members’ Code of Conduct

(f) To contribute to the good governance of the borough and actively encourage community participation and citizen contributions to decision-making

(g) Represent their communities and act as the advocates of those communities in the Council’s decision-making processes

(h) Deal with individual casework and assist constituents in resolving particular concerns or problems

(i) Respond to constituents’ enquiries and representations, fairly and impartially

(j) Be available to represent the Council on other bodies

(k) Demonstrate awareness of their corporate parenting role and shared responsibility for understanding the impact of Council decisions on, and championing the needs of, children in care and care leavers in the area
