We have powers to deal with dangerous buildings and structures.
However, what might be perceived as dangerous to a member of the public, may not be considered dangerous within the scope of the legislation, or at least the powers we have, to deal with it.
On reporting a dangerous structure, we will attend as soon as reasonably possible and assess what has been reported and decide what action to take, if necessary.
We can only carry out or request the owner to carry out the minimum required work to remove the danger. For example, if we are called to a wall in danger of collapsing, we can only ask for the wall to be demolished or cordoned off. We cannot request for the wall to be rebuilt.
We do not provide an out of hours service for dangerous structures and we will attend the next working day, so it is important to report the danger as soon as it is discovered.
Once a dangerous structure is reported, we will not generally provide feedback to the original complainant, as we will be then dealing with the responsible person (owner, insurance company etc).
There may be cases where we do not consider the structure sufficiently dangerous, but we may consider it appropriate to monitor the issue over a period of time following the inspection. This decision will be made by us and anyone we choose to consult such as a structural engineer if necessary.
Report a dangerous building or structure
If you consider a building or structure dangerous then do not attempt to enter or go near the structure.
You can report a dangerous building or structure by contacting us by email to building.control@chorley.gov.uk, alternatively you can call us during office hours on 01257 515162 or 01257 515151.
Insecure empty buildings
Insecure empty buildings may not necessarily be considered dangerous structures, although they may be a danger if trespassers enter the building illegally. These are considered structures that are open to unauthorised access.
You can report a insecure empty building by contacting us by email to environmental.health@chorley.gov.uk. Alternatively you can call us during office hours on 01257 515151. It is the decision of an environmental health officer to decide what action to take.
