Chorley Council has been awarded over £600,000 from the government’s Local Authority Housing Fund to support those facing homelessness.

Despite not having an allocation for funding from the government, Chorley Council made a successful bid for the money which will be used to secure temporary accommodation.

Councillor Terry Howarth, Executive Member for Homes and Housing said, “I am delighted that we were able to secure this funding.

“Sadly, due to many reasons including the rising cost of living, more families face homelessness, and we want to do all we can to make sure that those at risk can stay in quality and affordable temporary housing while we can support them to get back on their feet.

“The fund will allow us to buy new property and develop assets we already have to support larger families who are struggling.”

The purpose of the Local Authority Housing Fund (Round 4) (LAHF4) is to support local authorities in England to increase the supply of good-quality, affordable temporary accommodation. This helps reduce reliance on unsuitable and costly provisions such as bed and breakfast and nightly-paid hotel accommodation, particularly for families experiencing homelessness.

The four-year delivery plan will see the council:

  • Secure and deliver four two to three bed properties
  • Extend rooms at Cotswold House to accommodate larger families

Councillor Terry Howarth, continued, “This fund and the temporary properties it will allow us to secure acts to strengthen our overall offer for those facing housing difficulties.

“Our goal is to support people as soon as they face challenges, with initiatives such as our social prescribing service available to those who need additional support. If you are seeking support, please do not hesitate to contact us right away.”
