Once again, even more people are choosing to visit Chorley according to the latest STEAM data released by Marketing Lancashire today.

The data for 2024 shows that the number of tourism visitors to the borough has risen to 3.17m, an increase of 1.4% up from 2023.

Of those tourism visits in 2024, 2.87 million were made by people visiting for the day, and with so much to see and do in the district, who can blame them!

With historic houses, fabulous shopping opportunities at Chorley Markets, independent retailers and high street brands, a range of entertainment venues, Green Flag parks, a year-round programme of fun-packed events such as Chorley Flower Show and Chorley Live, it’s no wonder visitors head for Chorley.

Deputy Leader of Chorley Council, Councillor Peter Wilson said “This is really positive news for the borough, and we’re delighted that visitors are choosing to spend their time in Chorley which in turn helps to support the local economy.

“Alongside our brilliant local businesses, we are working together to drive visitor numbers to the borough through our destination management plan, as Chorley has so many great attractions to shout about. We’re seeing people visit Chorley from all over the country, including regularly welcoming coach trips to the town centre. If you haven’t visited us, why not come and check out Chorley – the best of Lancashire all in one place”.

Visitor and tourism business expenditure generated a total of £216.63 million within the local economy.

It’s also good news for Lancashire as a whole, with an estimated 68.6m tourism visitors to the region in 2024, up by 3% from the previous year.

There has also been more good news in recent weeks with two of Chorley’s key attractions, Chorley Flower Show and Astley Hall both being shortlisted for a Lancashire Tourism Award, recognising them amongst some of the best attractions in the region.

STEAM (Scarborough Tourism Economic Activity Monitor) is an evaluation model used by many Destinations Management Organisations. It uses locally derived data from a variety of sources such as hotels, attractions, tourist information centres, events and other accommodation to estimate the number of visitors, revenue generated and employment supported by tourism. The model provides the county with a continuous tourism economic impact dataset which reveals trends and helps highlight areas of particular growth or in need of support.
