In October 2019, we invited the Local Government Association (LGA) to conduct a Corporate Peer Review. The purpose of the review was to identify and celebrate what we are doing well as a local authority, as well as understand areas for improvement. This ensures that we continue to deliver high quality and accessible services.
The review took place over a 3 day period, between the 8 and 10 October. During this time, the Corporate Peer Challenge Team spoke to a number of stakeholders, including staff, elected-members, public sector partners, and voluntary and community sector organisations.
The Corporate Peer Challenge Team made a number of observations and recommendations, which will allow us to progress as an organisation. This will involve building on the foundations that are already in place locally, such as the council’s workforce, strong local partnerships and delivery of digital improvements, in order to articulate our vision for Chorley and set-out further supporting strategies that will enable future transformation.
Findings
The report included the following observations:
- staff take pride in working for the council and have a clear commitment to best serving the residents of Chorley
- we are proactive in our approach to partnerships working and have an effective and comprehensive network of partnerships that have a wide operational footprint across the borough, whilst providing clear vision and direction for our partners
- we have a robust financial management process and have continued to maintain a strong financial position throughout the period of austerity to the present through a mix of saving and income generation.
Next steps
Following the review, we created an action plan which outlines the steps we will be taking in response to recommendations that were proposed by the Peer Review Team.
