In May 2025, we invited the Local Government Association (LGA) to conduct a Corporate Peer Review. The purpose of the review was to identify and celebrate what we are doing well as a local authority, as well as understand areas for improvement. This ensures that we continue to deliver high quality and accessible services.
The review took place over a 3 day period, between the 7 and 9 May. During this time, the Corporate Peer Challenge Team spoke to a number of stakeholders, including staff, elected-members, public sector partners, and voluntary and community sector organisations.
The Corporate Peer Challenge Team made a number of observations and recommendations, which will allow us to progress as an organisation. This will involve building on the foundations that are already in place locally, such as the council’s workforce, strong local partnerships and delivery of digital improvements, in order to articulate our vision for Chorley and set-out further supporting strategies that will enable future transformation.
Findings
The report included the following observations:
- there is a fantastic culture in Chorley
- Chorley is a council with committed staff, councillors and partners who want to deliver the very best for the residents that they serve
- the council has strong relationships across the wider Lancashire footprint and is seen as a highly effective local place leader
- the council has demonstrated a track record for how it manages its finances and day-to-day risk management is well embedded into business as usual
- Chorley punches above its weight in the way it promotes and delivers community events
Next steps
Following the review, an action plan will be created which outlines the steps we will be taking in response to recommendations that were proposed by the Peer Review Team.
