Annual Canvass of Electors

Each year we contact every household in the borough to check if the details we hold on the electoral register are correct.  This is something we must do by law.

How will you be contacted?

By early August, every household in the borough of Chorley should have received a letter.

Please read the letter carefully as it will explain what you need to do.

What do I need to do?

When you receive the letter -

  • Check that names of those listed on the letter are correct.
  • Add any missing names that should be on the electoral register. Everyone over the age of 16 can be registered; but only those people over the age of 18 can vote in an election or referendum.
  • Remove the names of people that are no longer residing at the address.

How do I respond?

If you need to respond to our letter please choose one of the following methods.ยท

The quickest way to tell us about changes is on the canvass response website . It will only take a few minutes.  You will need to type in the two-part security codes included in your letter.

If you have no changes to tell us about, you can call 0808 284 1458.  Or, you can send a text  to 07786209358, with the message 'NO CHANGE' followed by your security codes.

Will new residents be added automatically to the electoral register?

No, at this stage you are just letting us know who is in the household.

If you need to be added on to the electoral register you can register on the GOV.UK website. You will need to type in your national insurance number as part of your registration, so that your identity can be checked.
